The Lattice ORAN™ Solution Stack is engineered to facilitate swift ORAN deployment, offering a comprehensive suite of solutions that address critical aspects such as advanced security (featuring encryption, authentication, key management and root-of-trust mechanisms), versatile fronthaul synchronization (including ORAN functional split options, IEEE 1588/TSN, and eCPRI), and efficient low-power hardware acceleration for essential functions like MACsec/IPsec and 5G-ORAN small cell capabilities, such as digital signal processing and secure packet processing. This suite is pivotal as the wireless network evolves towards a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) model and disaggregation.

Evolution of Lattice ORAN Stacks

Launched in 2022, Lattice ORAN 1.0 introduces the solution to securing the increasingly complex and vulnerable control plane functions brought about by the advent of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and widespread network disaggregation. Recognizing the critical need for robust security in the ORAN ecosystem, this version introduces "Lattice Secure the Wire" technology. It fortifies the network's defense by implementing Zero Trust protections, ensuring that all messages exchanged between the various control plane components are encrypted, signed, and authenticated. This comprehensive security strategy not only addresses the escalating threats but also lays a solid foundation for a secure, resilient network infrastructure, setting a precedent for future ORAN deployments to follow.

Lattice ORAN 1.1: This update, in 2023, expanded the Lattice ORAN stack to meet the intricate timing and synchronization needs across diverse 3GPP/ORAN deployment scenarios. It ensures secure, precise, and adaptable synchronization leveraging IEEE 1588v2 PTP Protocols & ITU standards. It supports a variety of timing sources (DPLL/OCXO and GNSS) and interfaces like PCIe & 10 G Ethernet, fully integrating IEEE/ITU standards directly onto Lattice FPGA platforms. This version delivers 1588 Class C compliance with mutual authentication security protocol, underscoring the stack's capability to meet stringent timing requirements with robust security. This one of a kind secure synchronization solution facilitates robust, high-performance ORAN deployments that are equipped to handle the demands of next-generation wireless communication technologies.

Lattice ORAN 1.2: Continuing the Open RAN innovation, Lattice introduces the latest advancement in the ORAN 1.2 stack: a pioneering small cell solution employing the Low Power CertusPro-NX FPGA technology. This iteration is meticulously engineered to ensure efficient, low-power data exchange and synchronization between baseband modems and RF front ends. It achieves this through an enhanced PCIe Gen 3 to JESD204B Bridge, integrated with advanced frame time control mechanisms. These mechanisms are crucial for managing timing and synchronization within cellular networks, ensuring precise alignment of data frames across the communication protocol stack. By optimizing Serdes speeds and logic cell efficiency, this solution not only enables reduced energy consumption and footprint but also eliminates the complexity of installation and maintenance. Removing specific vendor dependencies, our solution emphasizes versatility and security, making it an ideal choice for telecom operators aiming to deploy cost-effective, secure, and scalable small cell networks.

System Architecture

The ORAN 1.2 system architecture features a low power PCIe to JESD204B bridge, facilitating bidirectional data transfers between PCIe IP and JESD204B IP at speeds of 6.144 Gbps per lane. This design ensures efficient data embedding into PCIe Memory Write packets for Gen3 speed transmission to the PCIe link partner, and vice versa, enhancing system performance and reliability. Integrated with a 153.6 MHz user clock domain and dual 250 MHz output clocks, including a 90-degree phase-shifted clock. This precise clocking setup, provides the frame time control, guaranteeing that data packets are aligned and synchronized with the network's timing requirements. Hence, enhancing the seamless operation and reliability of 5G Small Cell networks by minimizing timing errors and data corruption.

5G Mid-Power Integrated Small Cell, reference platform is a comprehensive development board tailored for 5G baseband processors and transceiver frontends. It's designed to kickstart customer development with features like 4T4R 100MHz IBW/OBW for mid-power RF and support for outdoor integrated radio from 1W to 20W per channel. With Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities up to 10W per channel and an all-in-one box solution integrating CU/DU/RU, this design is both power and cost-efficient. It's ideal for deployment in varied environments such as sports venues, hotspots for 5G densification, enterprise private networks, and college campuses.
