Silicon Image Introduces the Industry's First Analog-to-HDMI® and HDMI® Converter Products

New ICs Enable Consumers to Connect Their Legacy Analog Consumer Electronics Devices with the Latest Digital MHL or HDMI Displays

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 2, 2014 - Silicon Image (NASDAQ:SIMG), a leading provider of multimedia connectivity solutions and services, today announced the industry's first analog-to-MHL®/HDMI® converter integrated circuits (ICs) that provide OEMs with cost-optimized adapter solutions for connecting analog sources to HDMI or MHL-enabled DTVs.  With these new adapters, consumers can enjoy content from legacy VCRs, DVD players, camcorders, set-top-boxes, and console games that have analog outputs on the latest HDMI or MHL-enabled displays - including 4K UHD TVs.  In addition, these new ICs - when integrated into DTVs and displays - allow manufacturers to remove expensive and bulky legacy analog inputs on the TV, saving board space and overall cost.

"HDMI and MHL have become the de-facto connectivity standards for connecting CE and mobile devices, with over three-and-a-half billion enabled products combined on the market," said C.H. Chee, senior director of marketing at Silicon Image, Inc.  "Being able to connect legacy analog devices to late model DTVs brings the digital experience to a whole new audience.  Our converter ICs delivered with complete reference designs make it easy for OEMs to create small form factor analog-to-MHL or analog-to-HDMI adapters."

The Sil8784 IC is designed to accept analog component, composite or VGA input and convert it to either HDMI or MHL, allowing for a variety of adapters to be implemented.  An analog-to-MHL adapter has the additional benefit of being powered by the TV's MHL port, eliminating the need for an external power supply.

The Sil8788 IC is designed for easy integration into video switching devices such as A/V receivers, video processors and video switchers that need to support a wide array of video interfaces for home theater system.

Both converter ICs include VRS® ClearView™ technology, which features edge smoothing and picture enhancement, resulting in visibly improved picture quality.

Sil8784 & Sil8788 Features:
•    10-bit, 170 MHz video ADCs
•    NTSC, PAL, SECAM video decoder
•    Interlaced to progressive conversion
•    VRS® ClearView™ technology for removing artifacts and enhancing picture quality
•    Embedded 8051 host processor
