The humanoid robotics market is moving quickly from concept to commercial reality. Work that once belonged in research labs is now appearing in factories, warehouses, and service environments due to major improvements in sensing, actuation, and edge intelligence.
As these systems take on more complex workloads, developers must deliver dense sensor fusion, sub microsecond motor control loops, and real time perception within tight power and thermal limits. The central question is no longer whether we can build humanoids, but whether we can trust them to operate safely and independently.

Q: How would you describe the current maturity of the humanoid robotics market?
A: The market is still early, but it is moving quickly. We are seeing humanoid robotics transition from research and pilot stages into early commercial deployments. Humanoids represent the ‘physical AI’ ultimate instantiation, but the market is not yet mature, and adoption is not widespread, although we’re seeing the growing momentum.
The biggest challenges remain reliability, cost efficiency, and regulatory readiness. Key players include Tesla with Optimus, Boston Dynamics with Atlas, Figure AI, Agility Robotics, and several emerging companies in China. Investment momentum is strong, and industry projections suggest a market size of roughly $6 to $6.5 billion by 2030, with very high compound annual growth rates. Many analysts expect a major inflection point in the 2026 to 2027 timeframe, so we are on the cusp of seeing things really take off with humanoids.
Q: When customers evaluate humanoid platforms, what technical gaps do they most consistently struggle with?
A: Utility is one of the most common concerns. Because the technology is still early, many prototypes and pilots fall short of industrial grade expectations such as 99.99 percent uptime, continuous 24/7 operation, and safe, seamless integration into human environments, such as a factory floor.
The most consistent struggles revolve around hardware limitations, AI integration, and operational reliability, which can further be broken down into battery life and energy efficiency, dexterity and manipulation, AI autonomy & translation from simulation to real-world environment, uptime and reliability (failure-free hours), and balance and locomotion.
Each of these have their own challenges and gaps but reliability, uptime, and dexterity and manipulation represent the largest source of risks, followed closely by battery life and energy efficiency.
Q: Security is becoming a first order requirement for humanoids. What concerns are customers raising about trust, safety, and the role of TPM anchored FPGA solutions?
A: With humanoids, it’s impossible to separate safety and security. As humanoids transition from controlled development and test environments to human-shared spaces such as factory floors, warehouses, homes, and commercial businesses, physical safety, cybersecurity, and privacy are becoming growing concerns from large enterprises and early consumers.
A compromised or untrustworthy humanoid is far more than a technical glitch or system failure. It could cause physical harm, putting both property and human life at risk; create regulatory violations without the moral imperatives or consequences that typically constrain human actors; infiltrate and exfiltrate critical data or systems that are historically off limits to people without native network connectivity; potentially co opt or command other humanoids once shared security weaknesses are discovered; violate the privacy of human co workers; or inappropriately surveil environments it should not, creating fears of a “surveillance state.” Such scenarios could ultimately erode trust and adoption due to the high liability nature of these scenarios.
TPM anchored FPGA solutions help address these concerns by providing a standards based approach, defined by the Trusted Computing Group’s Trusted Platform Module (TPM) specification, for attesting critical elements of a humanoid system that are under FPGA control. FPGAs are among the most effective technologies for humanoid command and control and have long been used for fine motor functions, including artificial limbs, fingers, joints, and other precision actuators.
By combining the inherent parallel processing of FPGAs with strong TPM based attestation, real time cyber resilience, and state of the art cryptography, developers can establish a highly-trusted execution environment within the humanoid. Q: Where do Lattice FPGAs deliver the most value for humanoid developers?
A: Lattice FPGAs deliver significant value for humanoid development through their inherent real time determinism at the foundational hardware level. Unlike micro coded, instruction based processors such as CPUs, GPUs, MPUs, and MCUs, which are constrained by instruction pipelines, FPGAs implement functionality directly in hardware. This enables critical operations to execute predictably within a single clock cycle, rather than across multiple variable latency instruction sequences.
This level of determinism is essential for enabling fast, precise decision making and reliable execution in humanoid systems. Q: What misconceptions do teams have when they first evaluate security for humanoids — and what do you wish they understood earlier?
A: Great question. Teams developing humanoids are truly on the cutting edge. However, I do see some of them evaluating and approaching humanoid security by using models borrowed from traditional IT, industrial robotics, or consumer IoT. These are familiar, well studied domains that feel somewhat solved. Humanoids, however, are none of these, even though they incorporate elements of all of them. That makes it very easy to fall into a square peg in a round hole design fallacy.
What needs to be understood early is that security cannot be bolted on at the end. It must be considered throughout the design process and across the full lifecycle of the humanoid. It needs to be an integral part of the design philosophy. Focusing on solving dexterity and locomotion first without addressing security often comes back to bite designers later. The idea of "functionality first, harden later" usually introduces more risk than intended.
Another challenge is that separating cybersecurity and physical safety is much harder in humanoids than in many other systems. In humanoids, the two must go hand in hand. A humanoid that is mechanically safe and performs its movements without harm can still be turned into a weapon through a successful cyberattack. In that case, the robot may execute a malicious act in a very safe and precise manner, with the safety systems ensuring proper motion, accuracy, and control. Preventing this requires co designing safety and security mechanisms and carefully managing the trade offs between them. In addition, typical in a safety system is to monitor malfunction and keep a course of action. Whereas in a typical secure system if a breach or security malfunction is to occur, the course of action is to shut-down or deny. While the monitoring mechanisms may be similar, the prescribed responses can be fundamentally opposed. Setting proper precedence between these two is very important in designing good humanoid systems.
Another common assumption is that TPM based attestation is sufficient on its own. In static systems, this can sometimes be true, but in humanoids TPMs are only the beginning of an attestation to cyber resilience chain. Active, real time monitoring and immediate mitigation are also required. Privacy is often treated as a secondary concern compared to uptime or attack prevention, but humanoids are inherently powerful surveillance platforms. Persistent transmission of multi modal sensor data, even when anonymized, can trigger GDPR or CCPA violations and erode trust if not carefully managed. Ensuring strong data rights protection is therefore essential.
Finally, we simply have not had enough large scale, real world deployments to expose all the weaknesses that bad actors may exploit. This can create the false sense that if a system works in the lab, it will work in the real world. If there were ever a use case that justified repeated simulated attacks, penetration testing, and a "you can’t be too paranoid" mindset, it would be security for humanoid robots.
