[Blog] From Days to Hours, Lattice Prompt Brings AI to the Full FPGA Design Flow

Ask any FPGA designer what their biggest challenge is, and the answer is rarely silicon. It is time. Design schedules keep compressing while logic complexity keeps rising. Software developers have spent the last few years learning what AI can do for their workflows -- cutting days of work to hours. Hardware teams are facing the same pressure, and until now, have had few tools designed specifically for them.

Today, we introduced Lattice Prompt, an AI-assisted FPGA development tool that lets designers work across the full design flow in natural language. It does not replace the tools engineers already use. It connects them.

Lattice Prompt pairs with the developer's choice of large language model and agentic IDE via open Model Context Protocol (MCP), orchestrating Lattice Radiant® automatically in the background, with every response grounded in Lattice's validated documentation and knowledge base.

Lattice Prompt: Design in Natural Language

What this looks like in practice
One early user needed to port an optical coherence tomography (OCT) reconstruction algorithm -- originally written in CUDA -- to a Lattice Avant™ FPGA. A task that would typically take months was completed in 30 hours, with verified RTL running at 200 MHz. In another case, a developer needed to close timing on a quantum error correction decoder that was failing 200 MHz by 5 ns. Lattice Prompt identified the root cause, proposed a solution, and closed timing in 4 hours -- work that would otherwise have taken days.

These are not isolated results. Early users consistently report completing work in hours that previously took days, with productivity gains of 10X or more on common design tasks.

Lattice Prompt: Productivity Gains

Coverage Across the Full Design Flow
Lattice Prompt covers the stages where time is most often consumed: simulation, synthesis, map, place and route, timing analysis, and bitstream generation -- all accessible through natural language. Long compiles run as background jobs, locally or on a remote compute farm, so designers are not waiting on the tool.

Available Now
Lattice Prompt is available as a free download today. A one-command installer and complete user guide are included. It is compatible with the latest release of Lattice Radiant® design software.
