New Blog: An FPGA Primer

Who says history doesn’t matter? As Bob O’Donnell, president and chief analyst at TECHnalysis Research LLC notes in a recent blog post entitled “An FPGA Primer”, as industries mature and customer demands grow increasingly sophisticated, chip makers tend to specialize. Case in point is the recent evolution of FPGAs. Originally developed in the 1980s as an alternative to the high NREs associated with ASICs, FPGAs built their early reputation as ICs that allowed designers to add new capabilities and address flaws in existing products in the field. Today FPGAs are evolving in a new direction. Developers are focusing on either the high-powered computation required for data center applications or the uniquely low-power demands implicit in today’s edge applications. Radiant 2.0 Adds Key Enhancements

While hardware gets most of the attention in FPGA product announcements, software tools play a key role in the rapid and efficient development of solutions. Lattice’s latest design tool package, Radiant 2.0, offers an excellent example.
