My original design used GAL "A" devices, do I need to change my design to use the "D" devices?

The GAL A, B, C, and D versions, all functionally act the same when marked with the same speed grade. The D version is the most recent process used to fabricate the devices. The A, B, C and D versions are JEDEC compatible but they do have different programming algorithms, so you will need to be careful to select the correct device during programming.
