Network service providers are struggling to meet the demand of today's mobile-centric consumers, who expect identical quality of service anywhere. Service providers are now pursuing wireless technologies in the millimeter-wave spectrum to provide much-needed relief to the wireless bandwidth crunch. The 57-64 GHz band of spectrum, also known as 60 GHz, has already proved to be successful in wireless applications. Operating in the 60 GHz spectrum, products based on the WirelessHD and 802.11ad standards have successfully achieved gigabit data rates with relative ease, in comparison to current wireless standards. Notebook PCs, smartphones, DTVs, and projectors are shipping in mass volume today. With the arrival of 802.11ad products, 60 GHz is poised to become the wireless spectrum of choice for next generation wireless network that delivers gigabit connectivity everywhere. Here are five reasons to go 60 GHz:

  1. Unlicensed spectrum. Since the 60 GHz band is unlicensed, the industry can deliver wireless services without paying a hefty licensing fee to local regulators. This means that device manufacturers and operators can quickly and economically deploy innovative products and services to meet consumer demand.
  2. No congestion. Compared to the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 60 GHz is not congested. Wi-Fi signals will not interfere with the performance of 60 GHz devices. Even with growing number of devices, the directional nature of the antenna and high signal attenuation of the millimeter wave reduce the likelihood of signal interference at 60 GHz.
  3. Capacity. The 60 GHz spectrum has 7 GHz of bandwidth that offers the necessary capacity associated with the growing number of Internet-connected devices. The amount of data people use and the number of connected devices will only continue to increase. The 60 GHz spectrum can accommodate more data and more connections, while improving user experience.
  4. 4K video support. 60 GHz is the only way to wirelessly stream high quality, low latency 4K video between devices. Other wireless technologies must heavily compress the 4K video, resulting in a lower quality and high latency video experience.
  5. No cables. 60 GHz allows for seamless wireless connections between devices, eliminating the need for unsightly cables and wires.

60 GHz technology provides faster speeds and higher network capacity at lower cost to the spectrum. With several successful applications already in use, 60 GHz technology is bound to become THE ideal solution for future wireless networking.
