The Cyber-Physical Challenge of Humanoid Safety
Humanoid robots unite autonomy, mobility, and continuous connectivity in devices that are designed to operate independently and in close proximity to humans. To support this autonomous operation without constant human oversight, they’re often connected to existing enterprise or cloud network infrastructure.

These distributed, interconnected devices create a unique threat landscape where digital compromise can quickly and easily translate into real-world harm. This “cyber-physical” vulnerability complicates security for humanoid systems, rendering simple physical safety mechanisms insufficient. Compliance with physical requirements can’t protect workers if attackers can take control of equipment through gaps in digital systems.

Cyber-physical risk only increases as humanoids assume more responsibilities and decision-making roles across industries. For the teams designing and developing these solutions, security has evolved beyond compliance with physical safety requirements. It involves treating data security as a fundamental part of cyber-physical design, baked in at the earliest architectural stages rather than leaving digital inroads for device exploitation.

Creating Hardware-Level Defense with FPGAs + TPMs
One common approach to securing the digital infrastructure of humanoids is to implement safety logic software at the operating system or application layer. While this does help, overreliance on software-level solutions leaves gaps in security measures.

Safety logic can be delayed, bypassed, or compromised, especially in systems that must react quickly to stimuli. Any unpredictable latency in safety logic introduces opportunities for failure and attack, making it easier to bypass security and corrupt systems at runtime. This is why implementing reliable, foundational hardware is critical for proactive humanoid security.

When embedded between sensors, processors, and actuators, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) can enable core security measures without costly latency. FPGA-enabled features include:

  • Deterministic real-time response, detecting threats and anomalies quickly, often in microseconds, and acting on them appropriately.
  • Hardware-enforced safety measures that cannot be bypassed by compromised firmware, middleware, or AI models.
  • Parallel processing to remove security workloads from centralized chips and enable secure and streamlined operation.
  • Multi-sensor cross-validation that can reduce false positives and blind spots through synchronized decision-making.

To establish a Root of Trust at boot and maintain it throughout operation, FPGAs can be paired with a TPM solution. TPMs can validate firmware and FPGA bitstreams before tasks are executed, ensuring that only authenticated logic is able to run. The TPM also acts as a secure store of trust, providing tamper-resistant key storage, attestation, and secure boot. By pairing FPGAs and TPMs, developers can create a strong hardware-level security foundation that maintains integrity in physical humanoid deployments.

Future-Proofing Humanoid Deployments
Protecting against today’s cyber threats does not necessarily prepare humanoid robots for the threats of tomorrow. These devices are meant to be robust and reliable, often with plans to be in service for a decade or more. That’s why humanoids must be designed to adapt to new security risks, especially those associated with the rise of quantum computing.

Quantum computing capabilities will be able to break modern cryptographic algorithms like RSA and elliptic curve cryptography. If these algorithms are baked into humanoid operating systems with no flexibility to upgrade or adapt, the equipment will be out of date as soon as the first quantum computer goes online. What’s more, unprotected humanoids are susceptible to common “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks that intercept data today in anticipation of decrypting it with quantum capabilities, once available.

This makes supporting post-quantum cryptography (PQC) a necessity in humanoid deployments. PQC techniques are critical for securing firmware, validating FPGA bitstreams, and protecting over-the-air updates throughout a humanoid robot’s lifespan. Robust and reprogrammable FPGAs ensure that PQC techniques and algorithms remain up to date with quantum standards and threats, ensuring long-lasting security rather than present-day protection.

Designing for Trust from Day One
As industries prepare to make humanoid deployments more widespread, developers need to pay equal attention to physical safety and digital security. Consistent and reliable protection will be rooted at the hardware level, where FPGA-based and TPM-anchored roots of trust can ensure that real-time determinism, platform integrity, and cryptographic trust are enforced even when software fails.
