Organizations face more cyberattacks today than ever before as cyber criminals and bad actors develop new ways to attack systems with each new software and hardware device deployed. In fact, a 2021 Cyber Resilient Organization Study found that 61% of respondents were forced to pay the ransom in a ransomware attack. This metric underscores the fact that being cybersecure is no longer enough, companies today must also be cyber resilient so they can quickly respond to and recover from attacks as they happen. Cyber resiliency brings together information security, business continuity, and overall organization resilience as it requires the ability to continuously deliver an intended outcome despite adverse cyber events.

Lattice is committed to helping our customers and partners develop secure, resilient embedded systems, and as part of that effort we have hosted free, quarterly series of virtual security seminars since 2021 to help educate the masses on some of today’s most relevant cybersecurity threats and solutions.

Read on for snapshots of what we covered in our 2022 security seminars.

Anti-Fragile Security and Post-Quantum Crypto Readiness

The first Lattice security seminar of 2022 covered the challenges, opportunities, and latest programable logic solutions for cyber resilient, anti-fragile security and post-quantum (PQ) cryptography. To increase cyber resiliency against ransomware, firmware, and other vulnerabilities, businesses need to look toward solutions like post-quantum cryptography to ensure systems are both secure and resilient in today’s globally interdependent supply chains.

The goal of PQ cryptography is to develop cryptographic systems that are secure against quantum and classic computers, and can work alongside existing communications protocols and networks. FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) are ideal for implementing cyber resilient systems with PQ crypto algorithms enabled in them. At Lattice, we create and drive partnerships and alliances with like-minded industry leaders in the PQ crypto space to advance threat awareness among our customers and the embedded community. Cyber Resiliency for Firmware Protections & Supply Chain Security

In our second quarter security seminar, the Lattice team was joined by our partner AMI to discuss firmware and supply chain protection in computing and datacenter applications.

While today’s global supply chain is incredibly fragile, emerging security standards such as NIST 800-193 Platform Firmware Resiliency (PFR) Guidelines and Trusted Computing Group’s Guidelines for Cyber Resilient Technologies (CyRes) are shaping how solutions are being built to help ensure systems are protected. The guidelines boil down to three key functions required for a system to be cyber resilient: protect, detect, and recover.

Unfortunately, many organizations still fall short when it comes to the “detect” and “recover” functions of cyber resiliency. With numerous vulnerable firmware components, companies require the ability to dynamically monitor and configure responses to threats as they arise. The Lattice Sentry™ solution stack enables real-time dynamic monitoring ability as an out-of-the-box solution for PFR.

Reimagining Telecom Security Solutions for 5G Networks & ORAN with FPGAs

The global supply chain is not the only environment with an ever-increasing threat landscape. Network security has also become more vulnerable as technology and network architecture advance and evolve.

The rollout and rapid adoption of 5G and ORAN (Open Radio Access Network) continues to decentralize virtually all aspects of the network, making improved cyber resiliency imperative for the 5G ecosystem. Telecommunication network architects must focus on Root of Trust (RoT) foundations and begin automating the cyber resilience cycle of protection, detection, and recovery in order to appropriately respond to inevitable security attacks. 5G systems that are built with Lattice FPGAs coupled with Lattice Sentry for PFR RoT, or the Lattice ORAN™ solution stack for secure, synchronized, and low power ORAN deployments, provide the robust security features telecom vendors need to continually respond to evolving security threats, particularly in a post quantum computing environment.

Cyber Resilience Demanded by 5G

Industrial Cybersecurity Trends and Standards in FPGAs

Our final security seminar of 2022 is happening on December 14, at 7 a.m. Pacific / 10 a.m. Eastern. We’ll be discussing the risks introduced by Industry 4.0 and how organizations can help mitigate them. While securing the data path is important, it is also critical to have a holistic approach and consider security threats at the platform level. Lattice’s VP of Security Business Eric Sivertson and Principal Industrial System Architect Karl Wachswender will be joined by our partner Caludio Ambra, CTO of EXOR International to discuss the current security trends in Industry 4.0, how to secure industrial communications with OPC/UA, and more.

Register for our final security seminar of 2022 here.
