IEEE 1532 (ISC) Support

What is IEEE 1532?

IEEE 1532 refers to an industry standardization effort aimed at simplifying the challenge of programming In-System-Configurable (ISC) devices using the industry-standard IEEE 1149.1 Boundary Scan Test Access Port. The IEEE 1532 effort is focused on the standardization of the programming algorithm at the component level (silicon) as well as the definition of the software required to describe the programming algorithm and associated programming data.

The silicon portion of the standard establishes a common device behavior during programming via the IEEE 1149.1 state machine. Any device which claims compatibility or compliance with this standard will behave predictably and consistently when given an ISC instruction.

The software portion of the IEEE 1532 standard defines a modified Boundary Scan Description Language file (ISC BSDL file) which has been expanded to cover the new ISC instructions. Additionally, there is a new data file (ISC Data file) which contains all of the device and pattern-specific programming data.

Benefits of IEEE 1532

The IEEE 1532 standard will deliver significant savings to the manufacturing floor, deliver faster programming times and facilitate a more efficient use of expensive testers. Users will now be able to program chains of ISC PLDs, from multiple vendors using the same third-party software tools and the same Boundary Scan interface. Users will no longer be required to have vendor-specific programming support or knowledge.

Device Support

Lattice is fully committed to supporting the IEEE 1532 standardization effort and has participated in the effort since its inception. Lattice has nine product families which already support the IEEE 1532 programming standard (see BSDL files below).

Software

Lattice has introduced the latest version of its ispVM System programming software, version 10.0, which generates ISC programming files for all Lattice ISC-compatible and compliant products. Additionally, the ispVM System v10.0 software now accepts ISC programming files from non-Lattice, ISC-compliant devices. By combining these various ISC programming files into a single "programming data stream," the ispVM System supports multi-vendor, in-system programming of entire chains of ISC-compliant devices, a capability offered by no other PLD vendor. The ispVM System v10.0 software is available, free of charge, by download from the Lattice web site at http://www.latticesemi.com/products/devtools/software/ispvm10
