Field Upgrades: Live Update Technology

Live Update

Field logic update continues to increase in importance in a wide variety of applications due to the unprecedented flexibility that it provides designers to fix bugs, respond to changing standards, upgrade equipment and add additional services. Lattice's Live Update technology allows logic to be reliably updated in the field without interrupting system operation. LatticeXP2 devices provide following three features:

  • Secure updates with 128 Bit AES encryption128 bit encrypted bitstream 2

LatticeXP2 devices provide an optional on-chip decryption engine and non-volatile key storage that support decryption of a 128-bit AES encrypted programming data.

  • Minimize down time with TransFR Live updatesTransFR Technology

TransFR I/O (TFR) is a unique Lattice technology that allows users to update their logic in the field without interrupting system operation using a single ispVM command. TransFR I/O allows I/O states to be frozen during device configuration.

  • Reliable Updates with Dual Boot SupportDual Boot for Reliable updates

During remote updates if the power supply or communication link fails during the update it is possible for the FPGA to be misconfigured.  To improve system reliability for remote update applications an optional SPI Flash memory can be used to store a back up, sometimes referred to as golden, configuration.  At power up or on user command the LatticeXP2 loads the internal SRAM from internal flash memory.  If an error is detected during this process then the part will automatically load from the external SPI memory.
