The desire for higher spectrum efficiency and greater user density has led communication systems to increasing use higher order modulation schemes. These modulation schemes approach the channel capacity limit, but are characterised by signals with high peak to average power ratio.
By active control of the transmit signal error vector magnitude (EVM), crest factor reduction can significantly reduce the transmitted waveform peak to average power ratio (PAPR), improving amplifier linearity, efficiency and cost.
