System designers are increasingly turning to the use of programmable logic devices (PLDs) for power-up control and system integration functions in their designs. Compared to ASICs and ASSPs, PLDs offer inherent time-to-market and design flexibility advantages and enable designers to respond to changing market standards and requirements within a compressed window of opportunity. PLD applications can be broken into two categories - control path applications which include timing, control and power-up management functions and datapath applications which include data, voice and video processing functions within an electronic system. The MachXO PLD family is ideal for low density applications found in the control path such as general purpose I/O expansion, bus bridging and interfacing, FPGA/ASIC/ASSP configuration and power-up management.
The examples below show how MachXO PLDs are being used in low density applications.
