Overview
Circuit board power consumption has been rising steadily. In fact, circuit boards that dissipate 200 watts are common because the boards must use several high power CPUs and ASICs to deliver new and enhanced features without increasing the size of the circuit board. This increase in power consumption creates considerable challenges for power management design, including the design of the hot-swap controller. Any circuit board that plugs into a live -48V backplane needs a hot-swap controller to limit the current inrush.
This seminar examines the challenges that must be considered when designing a hot swap controller, and provides an example of a circuit that successfully addresses those challenges.
