Now Production Released-
- CPLD Family Provides Lowest Power, Lowest Cost, Smallest Packages,
Industry-Leading Performance -

HILLSBORO, OR - FEBRUARY 2, 2004 - Lattice Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: LSCC), the inventor of in-system programmable (ISP™) logic products, today announced the release of the final member of the ispMACH 4000Z family, the industry's lowest power CPLDs. The just released 256-macrocell ispMACH 4256Z is the largest member of the ispMACH4000Z family. The entire ispMACH 4000Z device family is now fully released and available in commercial, industrial and automotive operation temperature ranges in various advanced package options.

4256Z & pencil

The ispMACH 4256Z device requires only 13A typical standby power supply current and is specified for 55A maximum over temperature and voltage. The ispMACH 4256Z joins the already released 32-, 64- and 128-macrocell devices with typical/maximum standby supply currents as low as 10A/20A (ispMACH 4032Z). Lattice has also improved the low Vcc functional capability of the entire ispMACH 4000Z family to support an extended power supply operating range of 1.6V to 1.9V, accommodating the end of battery life voltage of certain systems. The ability to operate down to 1.6V is essential to maximize the system life of many battery-operated portable and handheld consumer products.

High Performance, Space Saving Packages
The ispMACH 4256Z delivers industry-leading performance in the ultra-low power CPLD category supporting a 4.5ns pin-to-pin delay (tPD), 3.8ns clock-to-output delay (tCO), 2.9ns set-up time (tS), and 200MHz operating frequencies (fMAX). At 4.5ns tPD, the ispMACH 4256Z device is 10% faster than other 256-macrocell "Zero Power" CPLDs available in the market today.

The ispMACH 4032Z and 4064Z are now available in the space-saving 56-ball Chip-Scale BGA (csBGA) package (6x6mm body, 0.5mm ball pitch), supporting 36 I/Os and dedicated inputs. The ispMACH 4064Z, 4128Z and 4256Z are available in the 132-csBGA package (8x8mm body, 0.5mm ball pitch), supporting 74, 100 and 102 I/Os and dedicated inputs, respectively. Chip-Scale BGA packages, with their small PCB-footprints, are particularly well suited to satisfy the tight space requirements of many portable and handheld equipment designs.

Lead Free Packaging Available
The entire ispMACH 4000Z device family is also available in lead-free alternative packaging. Lattice Semiconductor is a leader in the development of lead-free packaging solutions and has been shipping lead-free devices for over a year. The ispMACH 4000Z devices in the Thin Quad Flat Pack (TQFP) packages are backward compatible with conventional leaded manufacturing methodologies. This backward compatibility allows users to surface mount lead-free packages onto lead based PCBs and/or use lead-free packaging with leaded solders. Users can now obtain a single, lead-free component from Lattice Semiconductor and use it in either a leaded or lead-free manufacturing environment. This capability greatly simplifies the inventory management challenges associated with the migration from conventional lead-based to lead-free manufacturing processes.

Coolest Power, Coolest Price
Not only is the ispMACH 4000Z family the industry's lowest power CPLD family, these devices are aggressively priced at the lowest cost per macrocell within the entire Lattice product portfolio, with high-volume prices as low as 2- to 3-cents per macrocell depending on device density, package and speed grade. The ispMACH 4000Z family is now priced below all competitive, standard-power CPLD devices. Pricing for the ispMACH 4032Z starts at less than $0.90 in 100,000 piece quantities. The ispMACH 4064Z is priced at less than $1.25, the ispMACH 4128Z is priced at less than $2.50 and the ispMACH 4256Z is priced at less than $6.00 in similar quantities.

Industry's Lowest Static Power Consumption / Fastest Performance
System standby time is a key design requirement for battery operated portable and handheld equipment. Designers want to minimize the standby or static power associated with the system logic within their designs to maximize the interval between battery charges or replacement. In designing the ispMACH 4000Z, Lattice took its popular ispMACH 4000 architecture, re-optimized its non-volatile E2CMOS process technology and redesigned key circuit elements to reduce static power by over a factor of 50. As a result, the maximum static current consumption for devices in the family ranges from 20 to 55A (maximum) over the commercial operating temperature range, while still maintaining the industry's fastest performance for a "zero-power" CPLD solution.

Power Supply and I/O Standard Support
The ispMACH 4000Z devices have two I/O banks, each with their own power supply voltage that can be set at the appropriate voltage to support LVTTL and LVCMOS 3.3, 2.5 and 1.8-volt outputs. The device input buffers have programmable thresholds that support the above standards independent of the I/O bank voltage. Extended range 3.3-volt I/Os are supported instead of the more common narrow range version of the standard, again accommodating the end of battery life voltage associated with certain systems. The I/Os on the ispMACH 4000Z are also 5-volt tolerant to facilitate connection to legacy chips and interfaces.

All ispMACH 4000Z devices are Boundary Scan Testable and in-system programmable through an IEEE 1532-compliant JTAG boundary scan (IEEE 1149.1) interface.

Design Tools
The ispMACH 4000Z family is supported by Lattice's new ispLEVER v3.1 design tools. The ispLEVER tools, Lattice's platform for next-generation logic design, provide designers with rapid access to the performance and features of the ispMACH 4000Z devices while maximizing resource utilization. This is achieved through timing driven placement and routing coupled with optimized synthesis support from vendors such as Mentor Graphics/Exemplar and Synplicity. Additional third-party EDA tool support is provided through industry standard EDIF netlist import and export. The ispLEVER software is available in PC as well as UNIX workstation versions. The ispLEVER design tools, including VHDL and Verilog synthesis tools, are available for download from the Lattice website.

Availability
All ispMACH 4000Z devices are available now in Commercial (0 to 70C ambient), Industrial (-40 to 85C ambient) and Automotive (-40 to 125C ambient) temperature grades in space-saving TQFP and csBGA packages.
