May 2009Q: Can I use a Power Manager device without programming it?
A: Yes. The ProcessorPM is pre-programmed for low-cost microprocessor applications.
The ProcessorPM is a competitively-priced solution for processor applications. Even more cost savings can be realized by skipping the programming step in assembly because the device is pre-configured to integrate a 6-supply reset generator and a watchdog timer. The ProcessorPM is also pre-programmed with Voltage Monitor (VMON) settings, timer values and logic. Although the device is pre-programmed, you can still customize the reset generator and watchdog circuits by pin-strapping and resistor programming.

ProcessorPM default configuration.
Three of the VMON inputs are pre-set for standard supply voltages 3.3V, 2.5V and 1.8V, while the other three inputs are pre-set at 0.675V so that an external resistor divider can be used for custom supply voltages. If the custom VMON inputs are not used, they need to be strapped to one of the standard supplies for proper reset generation.
The reset signal can be configured to release either when all the VMON inputs are valid or after a 200ms delay that begins when all the VMON inputs are valid. This is configured by strapping a single pin either high or low.
Watchdog timers are used to monitor system software health. The processor generates a watchdog trigger (WDT_Trig) signal periodically to trigger the watchdog timer. If the processor fails to trigger the watchdog timer, it generates a watchdog timer interrupt for the processor. The interval between successive watchdog triggers depends on the application. The watchdog timer duration can be configured by strapping two pins to any one of four delay times, ranging from 531 ms to 59 seconds.
