Programmable Logic Market Overview

Documents & Downloads

Lattice's programmable logic products are standard semiconductor devices that are purchased by systems manufacturers in a "blank" state and custom configured into specific logic functions.  The virtually unlimited number of possible functions gives system designers the ability to quickly create custom logic without sacrificing rapid time to market.  Advantages of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and programmable logic devices (PLDs) over microprocessors and ASICs include:

    • Lower cost for low-volume applications
    • Quicker time to market
    • More design flexibility
    • In-system programmable

According to iSuppli1, the programmable logic market was approximately $3.3 billion in 2009. Within this market, there are two main segments, FPGAs and PLDs, each using a distinct silicon architectural approach.  Although FPGAs and PLDs are typically suited for use in distinct types of applications, we believe that a substantial portion of programmable logic customers utilize both FPGA and PLD products.
