USB Type-C Cable Detect (CD) & Power Delivery (PD)

USB Type-C brings a number of significant benefits over prior versions of USB connectors. These benefits include a small reversible connector, two channels of 10 Gbps USB data, flexible alternate modes for transporting non USB data such as video and up to 100 W of power delivery capability.

In order to utilize the full set of capabilities, equipment must support Cable Detection (CD) to determine the cable orientation and type of equipment attached. Power Delivery (PD) communications must also be supported to enable negotiation of multiple items such as power support and the assignment of conductors in the cable.

The Lattice USB Type-C reference design provides three solutions that enable designers to meet these new requirements while using their existing chipsets.
